ABOUT THE ARTWORK

I made this little painting on location in Pennsylvania Dutch Country last summer. Each morning for a week, I woke up early and painted the landscape of fields, forests, earth, and sky. I made this painting using the trusty cigar box kit I built years ago. It is framed in a floating wood frame in black and ready to hang. I love painting outside. There is something magical about feeling the sun on your face, a cool breeze on your arm, and the sounds and smells of the outdoors while observing the shapes and colors of the landscape. Plus I enjoy the challenge of painting an ever-changing scene as the light changes and the wind moves clouds. Painting and drawing from life are an important part of my practice as an artist. I love observing the effects of light on color and shape, and translating that into paint. These images work themselves into my abstract pieces as well – a memory of a particular color or shadow or shape – all these elements play into my abstract paintings.

It’s through making things and being in the outdoors that I am able to connect to the world and to find my place in it. In the outdoors, we are reminded of how small we are in the world. We experience the vastness of the universe and at the same time, the interconnectedness of it all. My paintings are abstract with references to the landscape. I am inspired by the poetry of nature: color and light in the landscape, seasons, and the passing of time. All of our senses are awakened when we spend time outside. The rhythm of steps while hiking, the whir and clicks on a bike ride, the changing shapes of light and shadow between trees, the sound of birdsong—the memory of all these impacts on my senses feeds into my process of abstraction. I love to explore my experiences in nature through the formal elements of color, shape, line and composition. I ultimately hope that through my artwork I can inspire people to return to the outdoors and build meaningful connections with others there.
