About The Artwork

"Future Fear" is is the first in a series I am working on called 'Painted Faces'. I am investigating how changing the surface of our faces by painting the skin changes both how we are seen and how we present ourselves to the world. This portrait is an obvious starting point for me. The first question people ask me when they see the portrait is: "Which tribe is this?", not "Why is this child upset?" or, "What is this person's name?" In this case, the identity of the individual is subsumed by the ritual markings. And it's those very ritual markings that will soon lose their meaning in a changing world. Thus the identity that the painted face gives this child is the very identity that the modern world will take away. I tried to capture that aspect of her humanity. Her fear of an uncertain future. Something that is relevant to all of us, no matter where we live, or who we are. Oil on Canvas.

Michael Chomse studied Fine Art at the Michaelis School of Fine Art, University of Cape Town, South Africa, in the late seventies. It was a tumultuous time. He moved from there directly into a career as a documentary filmmaker, seeking the wider audiences that film offered his growing social conscience. Through thirty years of filmmaking, he has honed his visual and storytelling skills to the point where direct contact with paint and canvas is a necessity for his future development. He continues telling stories that have impacted him through the medium of paint on canvas . He is currently working closely with select artists in Europe, Canada and the USA, developing work that reflects a global perspective in the search for a new visual language.
