George Stinney was unjustly executed in 1944 at age 14. A native of Alcolu, South Carolina, he was the youngest person to be executed in the U.S. in the 20th century. Falsely accused of the murder of two little white girls he was exonerated in 2014 seventy years after he was put to death. Hopefully, people will come away from this painting feeling compassion for the "falsely accused." Most of my paintings are in oil because I love the flexibility of the medium. I chose George Stinney as my subject matter because I wanted to tell his story from the eyes of an artist. The painting is an emotional one for me. He should've been allowed to grow up. The left side shows all the color and wonder of a child, the right side shows the darkness and doom that befell him. This was the first painting I did on the subject. It has been in numerous exhibitions. This is my first opportunity to show it here on Saatchi.
