ABOUT THE ARTWORK

The original painting can be seen hanging in Morningside United Church. I painted it as a gift to show my gratitude after I wandered in as a lost soul. They provided a welcoming spiritual home as I journeyed out of darkness and into the light. Luke 22:43-44 And there appeared an angel unto him from heaven, strengthening him. I chose this scene to illustrate as it made me think of a time when my mum was dying. She was in a lot of pain one night when she felt gentle brushing across her cheek. It was like feathers and it soothed her pain. I always believed it was an angel.

My paintings are inspired by nature, animals and the colours and light of the seasons. I am also fascinated with the human form and expression. Painting helps me to keep a balanced view of the world by deeply observing and interpreting it’s beauty. I have been painting and drawing for as far back as I can remember and consider myself to be a self taught artist. I studied illustration in Edinburgh before heading to London where I began my freelance creative career back in 1999. Initially I set up a small business as an illustrator and calligrapher for pub and restaurant chalkboards. Before long I had requests for murals and bespoke canvases. My illustration work also grew and I became more involved with vector work and character design. In 2012 I moved back to Edinburgh and continued in that vein for a while. Although I enjoyed my work, I found myself mostly sat in front of a computer. I realised I missed the messiness and freeness of working with paint so I decided to start creating my own art. And here I am.
