My main motivation, if not absolute obsession, is light and light shining through trees in particular. Frequently my initial inspiration comes simply from gazing up at a light filled canopy with it's glinting flickering foliage and wonderful complex play of dappled light. To achieve this magical light show in my paintings, I have found that using many many layers of glazed paint and very carefully juxtaposed subtle changes of tone can bring out the depth of colour and glow, an illusion of luminosity and radiance. This is a very lengthy process however, a painting normally taking aprox 3 to 6 months to complete, but worth the time spent on it.
