ABOUT THE ARTWORK
Like all artists who have studied western art history, I have my heroes. Francisco Goya is one of my heroes. Goya's passion, spiritualism, love of nature, and justice all tie him to the good spirit of Yosemite, so I decided to bring back his favorite model the Duchess of Alba and her little dog to Yosemite Falls. One of the great things about being an artist is the power to reconnect history so as to manipulate time to create a new reality in time. I do believe that Francisco Goya and the Duchess of Alba would have liked Yosemite Valley very much!

I work in Yosemite National Park as a tour guide. I have worked in Yosemite for over 30 years. My artwork is inextricably tied to my Yosemite Geography and my ecological message. I am a plein air painter, print maker, and photographer. I also write and illustrate my own books. I am the author of "A Brief Instruction in Christian Religion," (A translation of Faustus Socinus), "The Chronicles of the Field Mouse Timothy," (Corn,Tomato,Wheat, Cotton, Sweet Potatoes, Rice Paddy, Pond Mouse and Yosemite), "Nature Vision" (Poems), and I have illustrated the short stories of my late daughter Sandra Fontana "Cereal at Midnight." I love nature and the wilderness. I am a proponent of the global national parks movement.
