ABOUT THE ARTWORK

This oil painting was created en plein air in Old Saybrook, Connecticut. I live in New England and find the ever-changing landscapes inspiring during every season. I enjoy working directly from nature and do so whenever I get the opportunity. While working on a larger painting at the same location the sunny day suddenly turned windy and cold. I retreated to my car and then created this painting alla prima from the comfort of my car. What I learned while working on the larger piece helped me create this painting.

Laura Levine is an American artist born in 1956 in New York City. She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts from the State University of New York at Purchase, New York. She furthered her training in New York City at the New Brooklyn School of Life Drawing Painting and Sculpture later to become the New York Academy of Art. Both of these institutions were just being established giving her the pleasure of studying with inspired enthusiastic teachers as well as helping forge the way for the students that followed. She received a solid background in art at Purchase introducing her to a myriad of ideas and techniques. At the New Brooklyn School, she studied the teachings of Charles Hawthorne from the Cape Cod School of Art. This training profoundly changing the way she painted. She spent decades exploring these theories while infusing her point of view. The product is a hybrid of observation and expression. Her goal is to create exciting paintings that moves her viewers. Living on the Connecticut shoreline for over 30 years, she has been inspired by the varied landscape from the marshes and seascapes to the farms and blossoms. She also regularly visits Cape Cod where she paints on location gathering sketches and ideas. She often uses these studies to create larger more involved pieces in her studio. She finds the crisp light at Cape Cod like nowhere else and the views wildly inspiring. She understands why artists over the generations have painted there and relishes in the historical camaraderie. Levine’s paintings have been featured in exhibitions at galleries, museums and cultural centers throughout the Northeast. She has been featured in many newspapers and publications and her work is included in numerous private collections worldwide.
