Mercedes Lewis creates abstract works using techniques of sculpting paint, masking, layering, color and mixed media to express her emotions behind the issues that African Americans are facing in modern day society. Her art explores concepts surrounding systematic oppression, slavery, racism, sexuality, identity, and dehumanization. She uses color as a form of therapy and creates art to express her emotions behind the African American experience. This piece is inspired by the concept of "The Grass is always greener on the other side". From my experience as an African American, we are raised to work hard to reach financial freedom. This is a concept to show the financial boundaries of a system not set up for someone to succeed.
