About The Artwork

I painted the statue because the beloved Greyfriars Bobby story is part and parcel of Edinburgh's history and so it and the graveyard is often a highlight when visiting the city. As legend has it, he was a Skye Terrier who became known in the 19th century for spending 14 years guarding the grave of his owner, until his own death on 14 January 1872. , Greyfrairs Bobby was buried just inside the gate of Greyfriars Kirkyard, not far from John Gray’s grave. A year later, Lady Burdett-Coutts had a Greyfriars Bobby statue and fountain erected at the southern end of the George IV Bridge in his honour. Several books and films have since been based on Bobby’s life, including the novel Greyfriars Bobby (1912) by Eleanor Atkinson and the films Greyfriars Bobby (1961) and The Adventures of Greyfriars Bobby (2006). The original artwork is initialled on the front and signed, titled and dated with the year on the back.

She originally studied Fashion Design at Central Saint Martin’s College of Art and Design, graduating in 1990, having chosen it over painting as the ‘safer’ career option and an obsession for fashion. Whilst working as a designer, she discovered that her passion lay in creating the finished look and so a successful career in styling began, working with leading photographers and production companies, for over twenty years, shooting advertising campaigns for major international brands. Seven years ago, as a progression from working on shoots and filming, Angela saw an opportunity to create a business, called Paterior Design, designing outdoor living spaces for homeowners. Angela’s original passion for painting was reignited a few years ago when she began painting landscapes for family presents, and was delighted to start receiving commissions thereafter. Initially her work was commission based only, producing nostalgic paintings of clients’ favourite and memorable places until she was given the opportunity to display her paintings on the walls of the Southern Cross, in the heart of Edinburgh’s Old Town. It is a favourite haunt for visitors to the city, and inspired her to paint much loved sights of her hometown. Even as a young artist, Angela considered herself a realist and impressionist painter, and is inspired by the French Impressionists and British artists: John Constable, Edward Seago, Ken Howard, and Kieron Williamson. Her particular love is capturing reflections on water and sunlight on the landscape, aiming to immerse the viewer in the mood and feel of the subject. Angela continues to enjoy commissions and developing her portfolio of paintings of Edinburgh, and other favourite sights around the world.
