ABOUT THE ARTWORK

This painting is a detailed close up of a woman gripping a part of her stomach and pulling down. The colors and shadows range dramatically from the darkest black to pure white. It is one of a pair. I have always been very interested in focusing in on specific parts of the body and one's relationship to them. This work in particular focuses on the stomach and discomfort with its form.

My name is Caitlin Southwick and all I've ever wanted to do was paint. I am a contemporary painter who lives and works in Boston, Massachusetts. My style is characterized by intense, saturated colors and bold value differentiations. Until recently, I ran operations for a Boston based nonprofit. The work was fulfilling, but I became gradually more desperate to be painting. In November of 2020, I made the terrifying choice to move away from my salaried position and into the intimidating world of professional art. From a young age, making things has been my primary passion. New clothes would soon become covered in paint and marker, art supply shops were my favorite place to visit, and I would tell anyone who would listen all about how someday I was going to be a professional artist. I attended Trinity College and graduated in 2020 with a dual degree in studio art and sociology. As a result of the pandemic, I have yet to show my senior thesis in studio art, a collection of narrative paintings titled "Face Value" to anyone in person. My first goal as an artist is to find a way to show the work and instillation that I was so excited to display back in March of 2020. Though I've not had any major shows yet, my dreams are ambitious and I plan to work hard to establish myself as a creative and reliable partner in the arts. I hope you'll follow along as I progress and make mistakes along the way.
