This artwork is titled "Guns & Butter Disaster" and it is an original hand painted and silkscreened, unique one-of-a-kind artwork. I titled it Guns & Butter Disaster as a reference to the macroeconomics term used throughout most of the 20th Century. In macroeconomics, the guns versus butter model is an example of a simple production–possibility frontier. It demonstrates the relationship between a nation's investment in defense and civilian goods. The "guns or butter" model is used generally as a simplification of national spending as a part of GDP. This may be seen as an analogy for choices between defense and civilian spending in more complex economies. The nation will have to decide which balance of guns versus butter best fulfills its needs, with its choice being partly influenced by the military spending and military stance of potential opponents. So here I have created a loosely connected group of artworks which take as their subjects politics, vintage advertising images, the human body, consumer products, iconic imagery, classic Disney illustration, pharmaceutical culture and glitched computer data corruption. I have appropriated source material from history, social media, pop culture, art history, old newspapers, the local shopping mall and even hospital radiology files and I use oil paint, enamel and screen printing as a means to mechanically fix these images in stark contrast to the designer logos and fashion brands worshipped by consumers. These works are a critical take on the haves versus the have-nots. I am attempting to fuse separate worlds together — the explosive and visual power of wealth, fashion and money juxtaposed against the grit of conflict, politics and power. The result? Hopefully art that takes collectors to new and sometimes nostalgic and introspective places.
