Hades Abducting Persephone Print

The black lines and then the vivid colors coalesced into an abstracted vision of the Greek myth of Hades and Persephone. Perhaps it came out because I was unconsciously grappling with ideas from an article I had just read. The article noted that stories of violence against women are usually framed in terms of the female and what was done to her instead of in terms of what the perpetrator did. Certainly the lines that starkly limn the figures center the violence. The absence of faces asserts that forces are at work, not individuals with choice and will. This painting came out all of a piece without the layering that is part of my usual process.
