About The Artwork

NOTE: The painting will be sent boxed with a mat and backing board, ready for framing. If you wish to buy the painting with the frame shown in the photo, contact me to adjust the price and the shipping. This is an unusual style of work for me, one that came without planning. The black lines and then the vivid colors coalesced into an abstracted vision of the Greek myth of Hades and Persephone. Perhaps it came out because I was unconsciously grappling with ideas from an article I had just read. The article noted that stories of violence against women are usually framed in terms of the female and what was done to her instead of in terms of what the perpetrator did. Certainly the lines that starkly limn the figures center the violence. The absence of faces asserts that forces are at work, not individuals with choice and will. This painting came out all of a piece without the layering that is part of my usual process.

What gives me joy in the world is experiencing still moments in the process of unfolding, whether a hillside that kneads its earth in geologic time or an insect perched, its arrival and departing flight reverberating in the frozen moment. My small work tends toward the figurative and my larger works the abstract. In everything, I need to see the arc of change, not as a photo would capture a bird in flight but the way we experience the ephemeral now that is never really there by the time we notice it.
