About The Artwork

As most painting go for me, I start with a crystal clear idea of what I want. I knew for sure that I wanted a bright contrast of color on a black surface, and that was enough for me to start working. Hours later, and also as most paintings go for me, I looked at the canvas and thought, "What the hell have I done." Pure dread. I had accomplished only a mess of colors on my crisp black canvas, and feel like I've gone absolutely nowhere. That crystal clear image that I had in my head was a trap, and now I'm stuck with this disaster. I tried to think my way out of it, but thinking is what fucked me over in the first place, and in a fit of frustration, I turned my brush around, and carved into the thick glob of paint a smiley face. As I lay in the X shaped eyes and the wide, cheek to cheek smile, I had immediately felt a change in the universe. In my moment of desperation and rage, the craft that I love brought forth an impulse so pure, and so vibrant, that I was able to finish the piece. The smiley face, though a total contradiction to my prior feelings, was the inevitable destination to which I have now arrived. Happiness.

I'm a Canadian Artist and Poet, born and raised in Toronto. I started my career in the arts as an actor, having worked in both film and theater. Though I have always loved the craft of acting, I quickly came to realize that my passion was not singularly the form of acting, but instead, was studying the form of pure human expression. Art, in all varieties, is the language of human existence. It is the binder that holds our entire species together, and is a conduit between a two souls, channeling feelings and experiences beyond the articulation of the common tongue. As I began to explore painting, I discovered a new voice, and my own ability to share abstract ideas and experiences. I became fascinated with the vast expanse of tools at my disposal, and the ways in which I could use those tools to tell my own stories. The idea of expressing simple feelings like "happiness through a particular hue of yellow" led me to ask more questions. "If Yellow is a color of happiness, then what is the color of Elated?" How far can I take this new language? What can I show through this palette? My work is a reflection of my discoveries, as I venture through this incredible medium. Each piece, an integral part of a collection of experiences and feelings. A key to the inside of my home.
