ABOUT THE ARTWORK

African hippos (hippopotamus) are the biggest and most fiercest killers in Africa. They kill more people than lions. Yet they appear to be cute and even kind of cuddly. That's until they open their mouths and you see their huge teeth close up. The artist reports having experienced this on several occasions. So it's about how we are fun easy-going and compliant, until someone threatens us. Then we become fiercely protective. The duality of us if you will. The symbols in the orange section are African in origin and reflect issues such as teamwork, a good marriage, strength, friendship, courage etc. Much of which reflects the hippo's nature. The symbols themselves imbue the environment with their positive messages. The vibrant and bright colors (orange and aqua blue) are reflective of Africa.

Ann is a vibrant and prolific artist, wildlife photographer, and author. She was voted in 2020 as one of South Africa's top artists. She initially became known for her ‘ewe/sheep’ series of work. Whilst maintaining her ironic humor she has painted a number of other series of works, including ‘Wild Life’ ‘Zulu Lulu’ and 'Going to the Dogs series. A recurring theme in her work is a play on words and the use of popular jargon. Her quirky, humorous, yet profoundly insightful art, allows the viewer not only to laugh at themselves but to examine many of the absurd aspects of life.
