ABOUT THE ARTWORK

This painting is unframed painted on a stretched canvas. It has D-rings and string on the back so it can be hung as it is. The piece is painted from a photograph of artistic swimmer Zoe Poulis. The painting is intended to carry a certain beauty of movement but also to give a sense of euphoria as the figure comes up for a much needed breath of air. The message is very much about mental health and how we mustn't forget to breathe in moments of stress or high anxiety. Simply breathing can bring a new perspective and feeling of calm and that's what I intended to capture here. Sometimes the simple things work to centre us and to ground us. We all feel like we’re drowning sometimes. This piece invites the viewer to come up for air.

Ryan is a Brighton & Hove based portrait artist who now works almost exclusively in oil paint. He completed a degree in Art & Design and Media Studies back in the late 90s. It was 2019 when he decided to put a 15-year career in publicity aside to once again feed his creativity and pick up a paint brush. His portraiture comes from a fascination with people and their emotional motivation, and he seeks to find the real person behind the face that we show to the world. Sometimes all it takes is a look in the eye or a slight curve of the mouth to capture the essence of a person and this is what drives his paintings. Through his work he seeks to find connection with people, hoping that they learn something about him and in turn learn something about themselves. “I’m not always interested in literal likeness when I paint a subject but in what gives a person their uniqueness. I love to paint something that brings joy to someone, and it really is my motivation to paint.” Ryan is a instinctive artist and buyer of art. If it makes him feel something he'll fall in love with it. His hope is that his work gives people that same visceral feeling. He works in his studio conveniently placed in the back garden, usually with his dog Daisy snoozing nearby.
