About The Artwork

Hetman of registered kosaks, famous military leader and politician. Born in aristocratic family in Western Ukraine. Graduated from Osrtog Academy. Since 1601 he served in Zaporizhia Sich. He took part in military raids in Moldova and Livonia. In1606 he was elected as hetman. He is famous for organisation of military raids of kozaks against Tatars and Turks. Military victories of kozaks under the leadership of P. Konashevich-Sagaidachny raised the influence of Ukrainian kozaks. In 1618 kozaks of P. Konashevich-Sagaidachny took part in military raids of Polish king Vladislav IV against Moscow. In 1620 hetman helped Jerusalem patriarch Theophan to ordain I. Boretsky as a metropolitan of Kyiv. This event restored orthodox hierarchy in Poland. The same year he and all Zaporizhia kozak army joined The Orthodox Brotherhood in Kyiv. In 1622 during war near Khotyn he was injured and died. All his possessions he directed to reconstruction of monasteries and support of orthodox schools in Kyiv, Luck and Lviv. Buried in Brothers monastery in Kyiv. After his death an artist made alone engraving in the book of K. Sakovich dedicated to death of this famous leader Petro Konashevich-Sagaidachny. I used this image to produce the portrait of hetman.
