Trapped in screens, a prison cell, Of pixels, code, and wires, Our bodies bound, our souls in hell, As technology conspires. We cannot break these shackles forged, By progress, wealth, and power, We're slaves to screens, our minds engorged, In this digital tower. We scroll and click and tap away, Our time and thoughts and dreams, We've built a prison, brick by brick, And now it's bursting at the seams. We've lost the world, the sky, the sun, The touch of hand and face, We've traded it all for screens, In this technological space. But still, we cannot break free, For we are trapped, and we are blind, We cannot see what we've become, And what we've left behind. So let us break these chains, And look up to the sky, Let us reclaim our lives, Before our time runs dry.

However, his aim is not to represent a beautiful image of a person or an individual in a futuristic context; rather, it’s an ongoing exploration of the process of how art is created concerning its structure, composition, colour, and technique. Like many figurative painters of his generation, it’s impossible for Whelan to avoid the looming shadows of Francisco Goya, Francis Bacon, Hieronymus Bosch and Lucian Freud, all of which have dominated the figurative world, their paintings both evocative, emotional and full of existential angst and anticipation of an uncertain future. However, Whelan is finding his futuristic path into the light, away from these titans of the art world, his work constantly seeking to go beyond the discipline of representational art and the more gestural expressionism that we are familiar with in the figurative paintings of Bacon.
