This piece is one of my “recycled works,” part of an ongoing body of work created through deconstruction and transformation of previous artwork. In this piece, various mixed-media and painted works on paper have been reduced to fragments, and re-created as new artworks. This process, part of a larger project that has been underway for a number of years, gives these works conceptual significance beyond their immediate visual characteristics, and engages viewers in a broader overarching conceptual process underlying the artist’s larger body of work. My shaped works, such as this particular piece, are "twice recycled," in that they are made from larger previously finished works. This piece is ready to hang and mounted on spacers that it appears to float slightly off the wall surface.

I work in a variety of media – drawing, painting, and sculpture, as well as installation and site specific works. While I have roots in the fine art tradition, my work is influenced and inspired by a wide range of everyday and vernacular art-making traditions. In my artistic practice I incorporate a variety of techniques and interests, in part as part of a broader goal of finding connections across varied aesthetic perspectives. Through art, my goal is to engage with others, from all walks of life and varied perspectives, and together explore shared visionary spaces. One aspect of my practice is that I like to work with found and recycled materials, particularly in my sculpture and site-specific work – it helps me connect to the world around me, to see it and feel it more directly. My two dimensional work also regularly uses found materials, as well as an underlying process of recycling. (In those works, in addition to found imagery and materials, the raw material is often my previous unsold artwork, or miscellaneous studio remnants). Recent paintings likewise incorporate a process of finding: marks, forms, and gestures are cultivated for discovery and revelation, and mined from an ever-growing stockpile of visual culture. An ephemeral spirit of exploration and discovery explores through this process new lands, experiences, and insights.
