ABOUT THE ARTWORK

This painting began without any intentions or preconceived ideas. Just my custom yellow mix which reminds me of summer light. Some palette knife work on top reminded me of a beach with a rocky shoreline...and so it began. The sky evolved out of the other elements. Although this painting is imaginary, it holds distant memories of the coastal area where I grew up. This 8" x 8" piece was painted on a light weight, wood panel. D rings and picture wire are installed, so it is ready to hang.

I grew up in West Vancouver, lived for years in Ontario and now call Fort St John, BC, home. Currently, my focus is on exploring ideas related to our intrinsic connection with nature and the landscape. These ideas have evolved over the time I have spent living in Northern BC and exploring the Pacific Coast. The human psyche is a powerful, creative force which is interconnected with the physical world. Like the sky, water and landforms, thoughts, hopes, dreams and fears are in constant motion forming, breaking down and transforming in an ongoing act of creation towards ever-changing realities. This quality of impermanence make for an intangible idea of reality but there is strength and beauty in the ability to change and evolve. We tend to think of ourselves as existing outside of nature, being separate from it. I would like the viewer to think of their environment from a different perspective, finding power and balance in the mutable, transformational qualities which are as much a part of us as they are in the natural world we observe.
