Inlet Print

Inspired by the wild west coast of New Zealand where beaches are made of black sand and the rain forest vegetation spills over the mountains. The landscape is ancient but constantly changing. Regular visits showed me the plants grow really fast here and the shape of the inlets of water change daily. Buddhist philosophy of impermanence informs much of my work. I try to show this in my interpretations of land and seascapes as a metaphor for the way all things we know are constantly in flux. The painting is built up from many layers - charcoal, ink, loose washes of oil and then many glazes of thin oil contrasting with loose dry brush work to give a sense of movement and energy.
