ABOUT THE ARTWORK

“The artist thinks our form is to keep walking through dark alleys, relying on dim light. The moment we reach the destination, we realize it was just a process, we get something, we lose something. On the road to a new goal, we move forward with both expectations and anxiety.” “As the familiar scenery of Daebudo Island disappeared and I found myself in an unfamiliar environment, I felt afraid. While walking carefully in fear, I found a road that was lit by a dim streetlight and hidden by trees. It was barely visible. It looked like an ‘Island’. I then thought that it looked like an ‘Island in an Island’, which made me smile slightly. I could finally find peace after I accepted it as an unknown known.” It is a midnight view of Daebudo Island, located in Ansan, Gyeonggi-do, South Korea, expressed in Indian ink on Korean paper called ‘Jangji’. Dark and unfamiliar landscapes and dim lights that are isolated like islands appear as the main images.

Cheolmin IM graduated from the Department of Oriental Painting at Hongik University College of Art in Seoul, South Korea. His early paintings were the work of constructing his own form through the interaction between the artist and the world - overlapping landscapes based on this. Recently, the individual's form and our world are interpreted in the artist's language, focusing on a specific region, and the world is built based on this to view the relationship and shape of our world through ink-and-wash paintings. Major solo exhibitions include < Nocturnal excursion on Daebu> (Bukchon Exhibition Room, 2022) and < Like a moth to a flame (Cetacea*Art, 2021), and major group exhibitions include < Exhibition the Gwangju-Hwaru> (KJ Sangsaeng Art Hall, 2022), < Daebu house – Time to create>(Seongam fishing village, 2021)
