Painting: Acrylic, Band Aid on Other, Wood. After art school I set out discovering myself as an artist. I consider myself a figurative artist; there is always an underlying human condition in my work. My love of 'Street art' and 'Found art' or 'Free art' resounds through my work, whether it be a figurative oil painting, or site specific sculpture, that grainy, worn down edge excites me in an artist’s expression, the scratching of the line work that was not quite tidied up at the finishing of the piece, gives the piece a uniqueness and quality that cannot be replicated. whether it be the canvas that the an artist chooses to illustrate their point, or how the image, scene or subject is represented, a unique identity can be found in the description and small details, that which only serves that individual piece with perfection , that cannot be replicated by the artist on their next completed piece. (These small Band Aid studies could be a microcosm of this) The Plaster studies that I have created, come from my youth, as an athlete on an international swimming program, I was often privy to the collection of waste and scum that can be found grouped, bobbing up and down in the corner of a swimming pool. Amongst this collection of unwanted filth was usually the odd blood stained Plaster or Band Aid. During the laborious lactate production sets, heart rate sets, anaerobic and aerobic sessions that where religious repeated, these unwanted, discarded and sometimes lost items would be a very small comfort, as I repeatedly pass them, my trail of thought would transcend past the pain of yet another repeated length in a 400m swim at maximum effort, and had me ask the questions 'what part of someone’s life did these objects once belong to?', ' why are they here now?' , 'How did they get to be here in this watery grave?' Once I swear a stamped blood stained face, winked at me form the fabric of a drowned Band aid, as glided into yet another. 'Tumble turn'. The reason for the 'Plasters' or ' Band aids' I have painted on these particular studies may seem obvious given the description above. However you could also connect it to a fatherless past, these painted figures from popular culture painted on these Band aids, (a device used to protect and help the healing process) are the result in my search for a father figure. One could also argue that the Personalities painted, with replicated blood, are the wounds each subjects' influence has had on my life. Joker (Heath Ledger) - Artist go to all lengths to produce thier work. Heath played the Joker flawlessy. A true artist in his short life.
