ABOUT THE ARTWORK

"Words" is an ensemble of works resulting from looking at the alphabet as a graphic system. The arrangements of chosen words and the disposition of their forming letters in space have been used as a starting point. The words are composed of non-repeated letters to facilitate the viewer's ability to decipher the word without the help of the painting title. The use of dark and light colours accentuates the power of evidence and the contrast between the simplicity and gravity of the formulation. The imagination of representation is carried out with an enterprise of restriction, questioning the meanings inherent to words by their equivocal value, being both literal and symbolic and taking on positive or negative connotations according to one's interpretation.

Felix Delandre's work takes form in Abstract, Conceptual and Minimalist paintings using shapes, colours, words and gestural marks. He often paints on loose paper, canvas offcuts, alternating between word riddles, scribbles, Iconography and geometric abstraction. A strong emphasis is given on the process and intuitive motions of the hand as well as the experimentation. The approach is both playful and irreverent as the canvas is laid flat on the floor and welcomes accidental marks and the picking up of paint, dirt and other elements of the studio environment. While artistic precedents appear to be among his works influences, they never settle into certainty. Though vaguely familiar, the images are clear, and present themselves with a direct gestural confidence. Much remains ambiguous as they possess something deep & troubling beneath their simplicity, exploring the very implications of the creative process. Born in Paris in 1987, he received his Licence in Art Plastiques from the Sorbonne University in 2010 and his Master of Fine Art at the Central Saint Martins in 2011.
