About The Artwork

In celebration of his long reign of influence over the sound of hip hop and over our culture as a whole, Junko Abe chooses the Compton-born artist, Kendrick Lamar Duckworth as the subject for her debut set of original acrylic paintings. Being a Saitama, Japan native and immigrating to Los Angeles in 1992, she was able to witness the turning point of hip hop, which what was labeled by many to be just a fad, growing into what is now the biggest and most influential genres, not just musically, but in lifestyle and in culture. She loved the art and empowerment the music had in the city, while also seeing the darker side of Los Angeles through the Rodney King incident and the LA riots. She realized that these artists and musicians would have to wait for a time where their hard work and dedication, despite their struggles, would be properly recognized. Now, 25 years later, we have finally reached a time where a hip hop artist can be alongside others in lists such as Time's 'Top 100 Most Influential People in the World' and be inducted into the 'Songwriter's Hall of Fame'. So in celebration of empowering those around you and achieving success in the face of adversity, she illustrates these artists and influencers in the commemorative, honorary light that they deserved; While incorporating her extensive background in fashion design and her love for art to the melt the boundaries that separate traditional painting styles from contemporary patterns and designs to create her very own original style of artwork.
