Adorned with red ears Painting a minaret Speckled with snowflakes During the second snowfall in the winter of 2013, the artist lived at No.12 Ulitsa Konstantin Stoilov from where he painted this unfamiliar view of the Plovdiv Central Mosque. Tourist postcards of the Plovdiv central mosque are usually views from the Roman Arena during summer. In contrast, ‘Konstantin Stoilov Street’ offers an unfamiliar view from the backstreets during the second snowfall in the winter of 2013. I deliberated about accurately depicting the angle of the mosque which leans precariously towards the right. Perhaps one day, the turret will become known as the ‘Leaning Tower of Plovdiv’. Until such a time, I depict the minaret as vertical. I must also mention lest some zealous art instructors analyze this work, that the shop windows of the lower floors in the foreground were skewed; not an error of perspective on the part of the artist but rather a consequence of feeble building standards. This classical landscape uses a traditional oil palette for colour harmony.

John A B Lansdown was brought up in the Lakelands of Cumbria, England, making him a landscape painter. After saying goodbye to his economics degree and the offices of England in 2006, he has worked in the art city of Plovdiv in Bulgaria and from 2011 became a member of the Plovdiv artists union. He has attended several symposiums in Bulgaria and also had the luck to be invited to the 2009 Atelier an der Donau symposium in Pochlarn, Austria celebrating Oskar Kokoshka who was born there. He won an honourary prize in the painting category (More information can be found at ) His works fall into three periods. While risking pneumonia to capture the subtle greys of the British climate, he developed an en-Plein-air working technique that developed into an impressionist style. This style has recently become so intense that he has termed this new style and colour "Distilled Light". By further intensifying the palette of the Impressionists, he can produce very intense compositions that harmonise with the shimmer of the Bulgarian sun. The change is dramatic when you compare the subtle mist of his English oil paintings with the radiance of his recent Bulgarian and Austrian works. As well as studying for an art degree in Cork, he studied violin making at the famous Newark School of Violin Making in Newark, Nottinghamshire. The violin-making course gave him a disciplined skill and a longing to make things of fine quality.
