ABOUT THE ARTWORK

LOVE is a pop art adaptation of Robert Indiana’s LOVE stamp produced in 1973. I enlarged the original stamp approximately 23X to fit within the 24” x 36” stretched canvas - a "feat of artistic engineering” as I like to say. I worked on this painting for a month to get it just right. I matched the colors, as best as I could, to the original colors, giving them a bit of a brighter, bolder hue than the original so it really pops off the wall. The green sections are painted with several shades of green, some with a sponge to give it the right texture. The rest was painted with various sizes of brushes. I painted the sides in several layers of iridescent gold deep (fine) to give it a modern, finished look. It’s a wonderful painting, a very bold pop art piece that gets your attention immediately! The painting includes a sheet of the original 1973 LOVE stamps and a First Day of Issue postmarked envelope from Philadelphia where the stamp was launched.

Jim Aylward - American (b. 1958) See more of my work at my Instagram site ?hl=en I am a native of the Boston area and was a long time summer resident of Nantucket. We have recently relocated to Naples, Florida. I am lucky to have always lived in vibrant art and artist communities. My painting style has evolved to abstract expressionism, in a style sometimes inspired by Jasper Johns and Willem de Kooning. I use mainly palette knives on canvas, but mix with brush and sponges on occasion. My medium is acrylic and my style abstract expressionism (AbEx) and Surrealism. I present with heavy texturized canvases. I occasionally use heavy paste, gels and other substances as an initial layer before applying the paint. This helps to make the paintings "come alive". I encourage people to touch my paintings to feel the texture. My paintings range in size from 9" x 12" to 48" x 72" and most are available for sale (many have already been acquired by collectors). I am also available for commissioned work. I have painted nearly two dozen "Hero Paintings" depicting abstract flags (U.S., Korean, etc.) dedicated to military veterans, freedom fighters and COVID-19 front line heroes. These are personal and not for sale, but can be commissioned. You can contact me through the email link on this website and I will get back to you promptly. Thanks for visiting my site! Jim
