ABOUT THE ARTWORK

I love dancing, music, and rhythm. My grandmother was from Guanajuato, Mexico, and we have a lot of family in Guadalajara, Mexico. My grandmother wanted me to join the local Ballet Folklorico. I failed my audition, and while I was cursed with two left feet, I have never stopped drawing and painting dancers. Many costumes in Ballet Folklorico represent different regions in Mexico. This particular costume represents Jalisco, and is the most popular where I grew up (probably because so many in my neighborhood came from families from Jalisco). I hope viewers feel the swirls of this dancer’s skirt and experience the joy of bold colors and movement. I chose the bold colors that I remember from my time in Mexico and that are so beautifully represented in dance.

My mother was an artist and taught me how to paint. I still refer to her typed notes on mixing paint for darker flesh tones. I spent many years playing the bass, singing, and writing songs in San Francisco and Sacramento, California. While I was playing music I was painting casually — mostly dancers and portraits. When my mother passed away, I started painting again as a memorial to my mother. I am still growing as an artist. I paint portraits and dancers in oil, acrylic, watercolors, pastel, and digital mediums. I am currently working on an oil series on the Mexican board game called “Lotería” and broadening my subjects to include landscapes.
