I use surface beauty to describe uncomfortable truths. My ongoing theme is identity, I explore who we are 'au fond' versus how we self-present. I use shape, line and surface decoration, using drawing, printing, painting and reworking soft 'ready-mades'. I am conscious and happy that my work is never made to formulae, and what materials I use depends on how I want to express my thoughts and feelings at any given time.
More recently my work has focussed on the fragility of the world: its core remains the same, but its surface is morphing into a new 'look' which does not feature human life. As my years grows longer, I see how much change has happened in my lifetime, and can only wonder at what the rate of change will bring in the future.
In the past I have organised/curated many group arts events, most recently in 2020 as founder of 'The Covid Chronicle', a unique global record in textiles and stitch, made during the pandemic; it equals the Bayeux Tapestry in surface m2. The installation toured the UK in 2022 and is on exhibition at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, SW London. The Covid Chronicle is looking for a permanent home, and if sold, the proceeds of a sale would be donated to charity (£1,500 has been donated so far to MIND).
My first degree in Education and French majored in developmental psychology, which informed my second degree in Fine Art and Design, where my art explored the construction of personal identity and the nature-nurture debate. The degree piece was shortlisted for the Celeste Art Prize.
I was proud to be awarded the Guardian Civic Award for Arts and Entertainment (London Borough of Merton 2014) for services to the arts, notably 4 group exhibitions at Merton Priory Chapter House (900 years, 2011). I co-founded the Merton Arts Trail 2011-14 and was curator of art made at the Royal Hospital for Neuro-Disability for 5 years.
My working career began in the fashion industry, from teaching at Lucie Clayton's School of Modelling, to selling ready-to-wear collections to the trade for designers including Bill Gibb, Zandra Rhodes. I moved into Market Research in 1990's and am currently a Director of FLOOD + Partners, a small, multi-award winning Market Research Consultancy firm based in London.
I make art in my studios in SW London and SW France.
