Leah Print

This is a large portrait of my love and partner, Leah, with symbols and words that allude to her spirit, abstracted in the environment. I choose to represent a gender non-conforming queer person of color, of Filipino descent, in an empowered, yet complex way. I'm inspired by unapologetic work she does a a leader in the Filipino domestic workers movement and her deep investigation of self. The Tagalog word "Makibaka" represents the courage and perseverance with which she embraces life. This piece is on stretched canvas, but not on stretcher bars. The canvas was left bare and primed with clear gloss acrylic medium. Drawn in charcoal and graphite, it's painted in acrylic only in touches. If desired, work can be put on stretcher bars, increasing its cost, and slightly decreasing its height and width.
