ABOUT THE ARTWORK
This is the last in the series of transcriptions drawn from Velasquez and Rembrandt, and working from dark to light. This portrait of Lezcano is very important to me, and I have reproduced it numerous times. The depths of psychology in this simple image are unfathomable. In the eyes of this young man, born hundreds of years ago, much of what it is to be human can be read.

What interests me as an artist is the process and choices of creation. I choose to paint neither from life (although I practice with portraits and transcriptions) nor from imagination. I paint out of colour, allowing it's inherent lawfulness to define the content of my work. This approach finds its closest kinship with some abstract painters, but I always seek to give my work a motif, an image. What I offer here is a direction which seeks to touch something of the essential in human experience via the medium of colour.
