About The Artwork

Communication by means of technology is an illusion. Instead of reaching another person by using modern communication technology we get in touch only with our own loneliness. Technology feeds on our desires and desperation. Ever hungry it prays on us, turns us into isolated bundles of fear and insecurity. Communication is the only way of determining whether we really exist. Humans, unlike fish, are constantly searching for validation of their own existence. It is as if we fear that by not existing our lives would be any different. Existence is overrated. Imagination is the only thing that separates humans from fish. Communication technology impedes upon our imagination. This piece is a part of a 12-piece series titled "CATCH" - the pieces share the format as well as the main motif of the juxtaposition of the fish world with the human world. Each of the pieces is created in a fish crate collected from a beach on the east coast of Istria, Croatia. Violent north-western winds knock these crates overboard from fishing boats coming in and out of the harbor. Each piece is a tableau of sort representing a stage in the development of human destiny. Found objects in this piece are a lure found on a local beach and an old SAM**** smart phone from which the battery has been removed, both for safety reasons and to illustrate the fact any attempt of reaching another person by first reaching for a phone is futile. Smart phones make the world smaller. Smart phones also make art smaller. How can we make the world smarter?

Born in Slavonski Brod (Croatia, 1975.) I live and work in Liznjan (Istria, Croatia) where we, my wife Natalija Grgorinic, our son Ljubomir and I, run ZVONA i NARI, an artist residency and a library. For the past 25 years Natalija and I have been engaged in literary work, publishing novels in both Croatian and English. In a sense, my visual work is continuation of our joint artistic preoccupations, another form of articulating ideas we share. It is also a manifestation of my belief that all art is an endeavor to both transform but also create and expand the world.
