ABOUT THE ARTWORK

In this small expressive still life oil painting the beauty of pattern and color unite. A simple arrangement of fruit and flowers combine with a collection of geometric shapes to create a fresh vision within the context of a still life painting. A palette of beautiful greys, soft tans and chocolate browns converse with the vibrant yellow of a lemon, the subtle flesh tones of a pear and the dreamy violets and pink hues of lilacs resting in a glass jar. The lines are kept simple and direct with bold strokes of paint filling the spaces and calling out the organic beauty within the forms. This enticing still life painting is contemporary in spirit and offers an engaging journey for the viewer with some simple precious things. The painting was created on a gallery wrapped canvas. This painting may be hung framed or unframed.

ARTISTS STATEMENT: I observe, and participate in, the change of hues. I stand alone in a perspective—influenced by the roads and detours that I’ve chosen. The subjects I interpret on canvas dance with tradition, but underneath exists an individual search for freedom. As a creator, I’ve always been interested in working with color. I see my life as having a palette of its own and I seek to have the chroma of my experiences come through in my paintings. Over time, I’ve realized the only way to achieve this goal is to risk exposure—to unveil my simplified forms to the viewer. Whether the forms operate within the context of landscape or still life, the resulting narrative is always a story of merit, regardless of public perception or understanding. BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION: I was born in Vancouver, BC in 1958 and then moved to California which is where my parents originally met. I lived there until I was 6 when my family moved across the US to New Jersey for my father's work. I grew up in a creative family and pursued art in college only to leave it upon graduation, dabbling with it over the years that followed. In 2010 I returned to painting on a more committed basis. This was spawned by some significant life changes and painting became my respite. I still reside in New Jersey and as an artist I appreciate the proximity to both Philadelphia and New York City. I've been showing my work since 2011 and continue to do so.
