About The Artwork

I relocated to the gloriously wild West Coast of Scotland in 2019. Every morning (and, if I'm good, every evening) I wrap up in a thousand layers and stroll down to the top of Loch Nell. It's a short walk, maybe half hour or so and I follow the same sheep trail through the fields everyday. Although it's a habitual route, embarked upon at the same time each day, those 30 minutes look and feel different every single time. The sun, the light, the cold, the colours are so widely different every passing minute it would be hard pressed to ever get bored of it. My repetitive walk should breed monotony but Mother Nature creates a thousand variations and inspires thousand different paintings every single day, just like magic. This piece is painted from the vantage point of a really flat field that bares up into the banks that flank Loch Nell. The fields below are normally filled with the most insanely adorable Highland Coos (who are ever curious to their small Welsh painting companion) and the banks are scattered with ancient oaks. I've not seen trees like them, not the large broad straight tress of their Southern version but instead, small, stubbornly routed, wind swept and twisted in the most spectacular sculptural forms. The light hits these tress and their form in a way I could stare at for hours, I've tried to capture these nuances of these light transitions here. I also wanted to translate the cold, not cold that is unpleasant but the cold that tints landscapes and gives every that spiritual crisp feeling. Like the sound of your walking boots on frosty grass; that small but universally satisfying "crunch" that echoes from childhood and signals the start of a new adventure. I hope this painting brings you a similar nostalgia, that you too can feel what it's like to stand amongst those mighty oaks and crisp fields, with the warm winter sun falling behind whilst you breathe in that cold, fresh air.

I run an artist studio and gallery in the heart of the Brecon Beacons in Wales, Uk. From the studio, I create a variety of semi-abstract landscapes onto handmade clay pannel. Inspired by the natural world, my works seek to evoke a sense of recollection and experience. I'm particularly interested in the use of light and dark harmony to evoke a sense of the familiar.
