About The Artwork

Someone is watching you. Someone is watching every move you make. Yet you act as if that makes no difference, as if whatever you do makes no impact on anyone's life, not even your own. The mistakes you make can be erased. Everything broken can be put right. So you wonder why that one who is watching you does not sympathize with your pain, your trouble. Human destiny can be amusing only to the non-human. Our actions have merit but the merit of our actions is negated by our actions. It's not easy to do good. It's hard and unrewarding. But only because doing good is not the norm. Human beings are not programmed to do only good. Human beings are programmed to do both bad and good. The problem is in the programming. The problem is in the fact that we need to go against our programming. But we're programmed to do good as well. Going against your programming means risking to never do anything good only because you're programmed to do so. This piece is a part of a 12-piece series titled "CATCH" - the pieces share the format as well as the main motif of the juxtaposition of the fish world with the human world. Each of the pieces is created in a fish crate collected from a beach on the east coast of Istria, Croatia. Violent north-western winds knock these crates overboard from fishing boats coming in and out of the harbor. Each piece is a tableau of sort representing a stage in the development of human destiny. Found objects on the right side of the piece come from my son's collection of toys and curios. Few animal bones were found in the woods nearby our house. No animals were harmed in order for this piece to be created.

Born in Slavonski Brod (Croatia, 1975.) I live and work in Liznjan (Istria, Croatia) where we, my wife Natalija Grgorinic, our son Ljubomir and I, run ZVONA i NARI, an artist residency and a library. For the past 25 years Natalija and I have been engaged in literary work, publishing novels in both Croatian and English. In a sense, my visual work is continuation of our joint artistic preoccupations, another form of articulating ideas we share. It is also a manifestation of my belief that all art is an endeavor to both transform but also create and expand the world.
