About The Artwork

Looming Presence explores the psyche of a person lost in the Australian hinterland when bushwalking – the sense of being overwhelmed by the impersonal and rugged environment. Unlike many other countries, Australia has untouched bushland within a short driving distance from its urban coastal centres. The hinterland is viewed by most urban Australians as a relaxing place to spend time on the weekend; clearing the mind by enjoying the natural beauty of the bush and wildlife. However, this viewpoint can change quickly when people get lost and the Australian bush can seem confusing and hostile. In Looming Presence the low-angle shot of overhanging gum trees and stacked boulders creates a claustrophobic sense of panic and imminent threat. To create shimmering and shifting effects I used acrylic paints along with iridescent, metallic and interference paints. The photo used for the painting was taken by myself many years ago before digital photography.

Jane creates a variety of retro paintings. Her “Surreal Pulp” paintings incorporate images from the covers of cheap popular magazines of the 1930s to 50s that were designed to titillate and excite their audiences. These covers used an illustrative or comic book style. Often Jane places the scared or startled cover model into an incongruous or surreal background. In Jane's "Wild West" paintings she appropriates movie stills of actors from classic Hollywood western movies of the 1940s and 50s and places the gun-toting protagonists in arid but beautiful desert landscapes. The mythology of the Wild West is based on the tough, self-reliant person who survives as best they can in the harsh and lawless frontier. Jane's "Hollywood Glamour" paintings use photos of glamourous Hollywood stars and place them against an exotic background. Her "Fairytale" paintings hark back to the traditional fairytales and myths that we all grew up on, and present them with a new twist. Jane's paintings capitalise on the vibrant clean colours and glossy nature of acrylic paints and gels, and subtly incorporate iridescent metallics and bright interference paints. In the past decade Jane has sold hundreds of paintings worldwide, been a finalist in many art competitions, and exhibited in major Brisbane and Gold Coast galleries.
