About The Artwork

"Happy Home. Fingers of both hands are intertwined with palms facing up. The tip of each little finger is held down by the opposite thumb. Index fingers are held down by opposite middle fingers. Unclasped ring fingers point straight up uniting you to the universal mind." Excerpt from Susan's book, The Dakini Deck Book, Austin Macauley Publishers. SUSAN Q. BROWN is known for her abstract and contemporary work that evokes the natural landscape and human forms. While Brown works from her impressions of the natural world, she also draws upon pillars of art history – such as ancient works by Buddhist and Indian artists in the East, and from Western contemporary masters Agnes Martin and Mark Rothko. She uses a vibrant palette of richly layered oil colors, working with a combination of dimensional luminosity and flat opaqueness. Susan Q. BrownBrown spent her early years traveling the United States, Mexico, the Caribbean and Europe—painting, sailing and absorbing other cultures. She received a BA in painting from Vermont College. In 2010, in collaboration with her husband, sculptor Aaron Brown, she was awarded three major grants from the Maine Arts Commission totaling $119,000. The most notable of these is WaterFlows, a large-scale exterior steel and resin sculpture placed adjacent to the quad at Eastern Maine Community College in Bangor. Her work has also appeared in the international digital exhibit Art Takes Times Square; the Brattleboro Museum and Art Center, Vermont; University Gallery, UMASS Amherst; Fitchburg Art Museum, MA; and the Attleboro Museum, MA. Also a Kundalini Yoga instructor and practitioner who combines yoga, meditation, art, environment and place, Brown’s recent book One Heart, Four Seasons: Kundalini Yoga, Experience Present Moment Awareness received the Kundalini Research Institute Seal of Approval. She lives and works in New Hampshire.
