About The Artwork

"Marine Life #5" is an encaustic wax painting. Encaustic wax is a beautiful, ancient, and archival medium consisting of beeswax, tree sap (damar resin), and pigments. The wax medium is melted, painted onto a wood panel in layers, and fused together with heat. People have been creating beautiful fine art in wax for thousands of years. In fact, beeswax, as a medium, is so archival, that we still have beautiful examples of fine art encaustic wax portraiture from TWO THOUSAND years ago. This painting of an undersea scene was created using encaustic wax and various inks and pigments suspended in the layers. Everything was hand painted. There are no photo underlays or collage work here. (although the little fish were sculpted and gold leafed between the layers). This painting requires very little upkeep, but a care sheet will be included, along with a history of encaustic wax, and an artist bio. With a little care and a bit of polishing on occasion, (a polishing cloth will be provided) your encaustic wax painting can last for lifetimes. Due to the nature of encaustic wax, your painting will never fade, crack or yellow. In fact, the wax will clear over time, becoming more beautiful, with more vibrant color, and possibly revealing things previously hidden in the layers. This painting was created on a cradled birch panel, which was then mounted in a white, wooden, "floating" frame that measure one inch all the way around. It comes wired, and ready to hand with hanging hardware included. J. A. Creech
