ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Painted with foraged ink on 135lb watercolor paper. Ink made from rhubarb root, sumac berry, beet, buckthorn berry, and acorn tops Creating my own foraged ink has been a great catalyst to start me painting more regularly again. It’s funny that I am painting more now when I have to make each color. It seems only fitting to choose spring ephemerals as my first subject matter for this new phase. Their delicate beauty bring so much hope to the winter landscape. Hope of warmth and life to come.

Andrea Meyer (American, b. 1984) was born and raised in rural Wisconsin. From a young age, she was drawn to the beauty of the natural world and had a desire to paint and create. She received her BFA from the University of Milwaukee with an emphasis in Painting and Drawing and Graphic Design. Andrea worked as a portrait artist for an awards company for 13 years and as a freelance designer for the past 12. She was commissioned by St. Patrick’s Catholic Church to paint a series of eight paintings. She is enjoying rediscovering her love of painting. Andrea is inspired by the beauty, truth and goodness of creation and the unfolding of each work as it takes shape. Creating my own foraged ink has been a great catalyst to start me painting more regularly again. Each color is a discovery and so much more precious because of the hours and effort that went into finding the material and extracting the color. Each color is a celebration of what the earth has to offer. Painting becomes a way for me to rejoice in the little things and my place in the created world. It connects me to the Lord who created all things. Andrea's studio rests in the middle of a prairie, surrounded by woods.
