ABOUT THE ARTWORK

The creation of each painting begins with a loose (or distinct!) mental image or concept (What is beautiful? Compelling? Impossible? Absurd? Moving?) and evolves first through synthography (AI) - using sourced images, my own photography, and poetic prompts to “direct” the generated images until I have something - or pieces of “something” - that can be further refined using digital collage & Photoshop - and establish the image “foundation”. The formed image is then printed with pigment ink on archival paper and mounted on a wood panel, followed by the application of a variety of media - such as watercolor, charcoal, graphite, encaustic gesso, chalk and pencil - to work the image “back into the world”. Lastly, encaustic medium and pigments are heated to a liquid form and applied. When cooled, the surface is luminous and smooth, and various areas are carved to reveal the underpainting and add texture and dimension. Imagining the source of snow squalls, winter's assistants ... and the blinding afternoon light on snowy fields. The painting is created on a 6" x 6" x 1.5" deep wood panel and does not require framing. To view a video of the painting, visit my Etsy shop at
