ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Based on the modern (blue background) organ donor card design, these paintings are a reminder of the importance of organ donors in the lives of those in need of transplants and also remind the viewer that we are all mortal beings. Memento Mori is a Latin phrase that roughly translates to ‘Remember your mortality’. This phrase has far from morbid intentions as the aim is to enable people to be grateful for their lives and to live their lives to the fullest. --- About The Fistula collection An Art Exhibition exploring Kidney Failure created by Artist Steve Light AKA SLART. "I’m 39 and this is the second time I’ve had kidney failure. I was first diagnosed in 2003, it was a shock to me as I had no symptoms, but there was a slow decline until I had to have dialysis in 2009. Fortunately, I only had a year on dialysis and I got a call one fateful evening, 28th December 2010. A deceased donor provided me with the new kidney that I needed and I am eternally grateful to them. I was recovering well, the new kidney enabled me to take holidays abroad, reach my goal of running 5k and 10k charity races and I even started doing kung fu. Fast forward to 2021, I started feeling ill, out of breath and very fatigued. My transplanted kidney was failing and this time It hit me hard. I lost my appetite and my tastebuds went strange. I slept for 18 hours a day and I was bloated. December 2021, I was receiving dialysis again and after a couple of months, I started to feel like myself again. I started painting a series of paintings so that I could work through the emotional and physical turmoil I had experienced. My intention for this series is to educate and inspire others.“ Update: August 2022: "I received a kidney transplant from my brother on 22nd July 2022, he is my hero, I am forever grateful to him and we are both doing very well."

I am a figurative artist who reveals personal issues that affect many people through my art. Issues such as body image, anxiety, adoption trauma, kidney failure and crippling shyness. I enjoy using large canvases to make a large impact and also venturing into mural art. I have been told my style is unique and has something special about it. I certainly agree that it is my own unique style and I let my passion for drawing and painting come through naturally, rather than trying to apply a particular technique.
