I am preparing to paint a series of images based on the Mexican game called, “Lotería.” The first image I am working on is “La Sirena,” which means the Siren, or mermaid. My instructor, Ruthie Virgin, said that I had a reverent style towards my work and recommended that I experiment painting with tempera on wood. I was already trying to incorporate copper. These three panels are somewhat experimental. While I liked painting on wood a lot (and have continued to paint on wood), I’m not too crazy about tempera because I cannot control the vividness of the pigment.

My mother was an artist and taught me how to paint. I still refer to her typed notes on mixing paint for darker flesh tones. I spent many years playing the bass, singing, and writing songs in San Francisco and Sacramento, California. While I was playing music I was painting casually — mostly dancers and portraits. When my mother passed away, I started painting again as a memorial to my mother. I am still growing as an artist. I paint portraits and dancers in oil, acrylic, watercolors, pastel, and digital mediums. I am currently working on an oil series on the Mexican board game called “Lotería” and broadening my subjects to include landscapes.
