Why abstract? I was a figurative/representational painter in the beginning, and it got boring. Since we are painting illusions anyway, why not jump to the ultimate illusion, and free ourselves of any denotative/connotative connections and just focus on color interplay, shape to shape interaction, layers and overlays, light and dark, and see if we can invoke a feeling of mutual visual pleasure? That's quite the feat, having someone say "wow, that's really awesome looking" when they are looking at a bunch of blobs and splashes, flicks and dashes.
