About The Artwork

I began work on this piece in late 2020. I had made a quick memory sketch of a Japanese Lady I saw on a train in Japan, when I visited in 2019. The sketch was made from memory one evening, while sitting in a bar. The mask was the main reason for making the sketch, because to Western Eyes at this time in 2019 the Global Pandemic was unheard of and mask wearing although common place in Asia was very unusual outside Asia; except for a few visiting Asians in the West. During the long periods of Lockdown I came across the sketch and began to realise the relevance in the light of the emergence of the Pandemic. I know that we have had countless re-workings of the message of wearing a mask....all manner of famous artworks have been re-created with masks in place. However, I wanted to make a simple statement that to wear a Mask can be an asset, not only as a protection to one's self and those around you, but as a fashion statement; enhancing one's attractiveness with an air of mystery as to the character behind the mask. The title is intended to be a take on Earthling...a Global Citizen...as opposed to an Alien from outer space (and Ling as the surname/family name hints at a Chinese family name, in other words a young lady of Asian descent). So a kind of East meets West making the situation truly global. 2020 was the year that the outbreak was declared a global pandemic and of course everybody knows the phrase 2020 vision; not that anyone would have envisaged how the year turned out. Due to the facts that it is a 3D surface relief piece and created in metallic colours, which reflect the light; I don't feel it is suitable to make available for prints at this time. I see it more as a one-off. I hope you like it.

I was short-listed (top 25) in the Jackson's Mussini Oil Painting Competition with my very colourful and textured painting of a Brass and Glass Still-life which is available to buy as an open-edition print on this site (the original is a small block canvas oils "Glass, Brass and Colour" 40 x 40 x 4cm). A life-long artist; producing work in a wide range of mediums; I often paint in either Acrylics or Oils. I have over 30 yrs experience as a Professional Photographer much of which gained on assignments across the globe. Although I was awarded a distinction in A level art many years ago I am largely self-taught, constantly following my own ideas and striving to develop my techniques. I am continuing to explore large geometric abstract compositions with textural effects.
