About The Artwork

“Moldova” depicts a vortex, a universal pattern of growth and evolution, reminding a dance of the traditional Moldovan rug colors. Having in mind that art is a vital drive of pure energy, the artist seeks through the vortex for the "peak of maximum energy". The optical circular illusion of Balan's works envelops us and forces our mind to rotate in a perennial and universal motion; it generates a centripetal movement which is also an illusion, an illusion of reality, true, great, unresolved anxiety of the contemporary world. What is Moldova, what is its past and what’s its future? Is the vortex moving inward or outward? Is Moldova going down or it will finally liberate itself? These are the key questions addressed in this beautiful and intense abstract painting.

Cristina Balan is an abstract artist. Born in Moldova, she studied arts from the age of five. Very early on, her works were exhibited at various artistic performances in Moldova and abroad. The fall of the Soviet Union paused Cristina’s creative ascension, as after graduating the School of Fine Arts she had to work in the corporate world to be able to support herself. In her thirties, she became a prominent business community leader, and in early forties was appointed as the Ambassador to the United States. In 2019, after an almost 20-year hiatus from painting, Cristina returned full-time to art, her abstract paintings being quickly noticed and appreciated by the public. Contemporary art magazines featured her works. Her paintings have been displayed in art shows in Washington D.C., New York City, and Kiev. Cristina’s works are currently featured by art galleries from NYC, Tokyo, Barcelona and Treviso.
