Monticello Is Burning is a meditation on the healing process the famed University of Virginia continues to convulse through in regard to its past. The painting depicts the ghosts of slavery rising from the bed to surround the statue of the University's founder, Thomas Jefferson. Inspired by Kara Walker's cutouts of slave imagery, the painting depicts a crows-coming-to-roost moment of reckoning, signaling a new beginning for the school's core and moral center.
