ABOUT THE ARTWORK

In creating this work, I hope that viewers are drawn into the ambiguity of the subject. The indistinct features and muted tones are meant to evoke a sense of introspection, allowing each person who views the piece to project their own emotions and narratives onto the figure. I want the painting to be a mirror of sorts, reflecting back the inner world of the viewer, whether that be one of melancholy, mystery, or quiet contemplation. I chose oil on canvas as my medium because of its versatility and the richness it offers in texture and depth. The ability to build up and scrape away layers of paint allowed me to create a sense of time and transformation within the piece, mirroring the ephemeral nature of memory and identity. The subject matter—a solitary, abstracted figure—was selected to explore the universal human experience of being seen and yet, at times, feeling unseen or undefined. The style, with its loose brushstrokes and muted palette, reflects my desire to capture the delicate balance between presence and absence, form and formlessness. Ultimately, this piece is an invitation for viewers to pause and reflect, not just on the artwork, but on their own emotions and the transient nature of our perceptions.

Elif Yilmazturk (b. 1995) is a London-born artist whose work is an exploration of the fluidity of form and the delicate intersection between the human experience and the natural world. Her art bridges the gap between Neo-Impressionism and contemporary abstraction, creating a visual language that is both ethereal and deeply emotive. Elif primarily works with oil paints and ink, using these mediums to convey movement, emotion, and the ephemeral nature of existence. Her work often features swirling, almost dreamlike compositions that blur the boundaries between the subject and their surroundings, as seen in her depictions of intertwined figures and flowing natural forms. These elements suggest a narrative that is both universal and deeply personal, inviting the viewer to immerse themselves in a world where identity and memory are in constant flux. Inspired by the rich artistic heritage of her home city, as well as the fluidity of natural elements, Elif's work captures moments of transformation and transition. Her ink drawings, with their bold, gestural lines, echo the raw immediacy of human emotion, while her oil paintings delve into more nuanced explorations of light, colour, and texture, often evoking the sense of being on the cusp of a dream. Now based in London, Elif continues to push the boundaries of her craft, blending traditional techniques with modern sensibilities. Her work has been described as both haunting and serene, offering a meditative space for viewers to reflect on the transient nature of life and the ever-changing landscapes of our inner worlds.
