Alek Subairi is the popular name of A. Subairi. Born in Sampang, Madura, East Java, Indonesia. He is a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Surabaya State University. He exhibited paintings with the Sampang Artists Community in 2003, when he was still a final semester student. Apart from painting he also works as a graphic designer on books, magazines and book covers. He also creates illustrations for literary books, including a book entitled "Men from the Past" (a book of short stories by Sirikit Syah published in August 2021), "Nietzsche Temple" (a book of poetry by Binhad Nurrohmat published in 2020), "Boneka Tambal Sulam Berwajah Maroon” (a poetry book by Hendro Siswanggono published in November 2022), and others. Apart from his intense painting, Alek also writes poetry. Alek's poetry books that have been published include "Kembang Pitutur" published in 2011. This book contains his poems and illustration artworks and received a nomination for the 2011 Khatulistiwa Literature Award. His second book, entitled "Bisikan" was published in 2017. Alek's poems were also selected in a number of literary events in Indonesia, such as "Ubud Writers & Readers Festival 2013" in Bali, "Gathering of Indonesian Writers 4" in Ternate in 2011, "Borobudur Writers and Cultural Festival 2023" in Malang. Alek also one of 120 East Java artists who received awards at the 2019 East Java Harmony Event. Currently Alek lives in Sidoarjo, East Java.
