ABOUT THE ARTWORK

The lunar hare is represented in the folklore of the peoples of the world as a hare or rabbit that lives on the moon. This idea arose due to a pareidolic visual illusion - dark spots on the surface of the Moon were perceived as the figure of a hare or a rabbit. Lunar animal and attribute of all lunar deities. It personifies rebirth, a return to youth, as well as intuition and "light in darkness". Very often the hare is associated with sacrificial fire and "life that went through death." Everywhere the hare is a symbol of fertility, it is a guarantee of love, timidity, worldly wisdom, speed, agility. The hare on the moon appears almost everywhere in mythology and, being a lunar animal, along with a dog and a lizard, it serves as an intermediary between man and lunar deities. The earliest mention of the Moon Hare is the poetry collection "Chu stanzas", written in ancient China during the Western Han dynasty: it says that a white moon hare lives in the Moon Palace (Ch. 月 兔, pinyin yuè tù, pall. Yue tu) who, sitting in the shade of the guihua cinnamon tree, pounds the medicine of immortality in a mortar all year round. Other poets during the Han dynasty often called the moon hare the "jade hare" (Ch. 玉兔, pinyin yù tù, pall. Yu tu) or the “golden hare” (Ch. 金 兔, pinyin jīn tù, pall. Jin tu), and these phrases came to be often used to refer to the moon. In creating my works I was inspired by the Art Nouveau period and symbolism, in particular by Odilon Redon, especially in reference to the colors and the mystery of strange creatures.
