Born in Sichuan, China, I was trained by a local painter before 17, but went on to study science and got a PhD in theoretical physics. Worked on string theories for 15 years in China, UK, Germany and Italy. Worked as a financial systems consultant in Canada, US and France, before devoting myself full-time to painting during the pandemic in 2020. My artistic influencers range from old masters to contemporaries such as El Greco, Vincent van Gogh, Vasily Kandinsky, William de Kooning, Joan Mitchell, Anselm Kiefer and Cecily Brown. My aesthetic tastes are built upon oriental philosophies and western Modernism. In particular the practices and believes of the following masters: French symbolist poets Baudelaire and Valery; the 8th century Chinese monk calligrapher Huaisu, the 13th century monk painter Muqi (Japanese name Mokkei) and the school of Japanese Zen painters which emphasizes pure expressions of the artist’s spiritual inspiration. My art is a result of the artistic pursuits to express my thoughts and observations of certain things in nature or aspects of life in the world, often juxtaposed with my past experiences as a physicist, a computer engineer and a world traveller.
