My Rothko #1 Print

Between an upturned sea and a turbulent sky - both of which I muted in white - there’s me. Here I am in purple, a vibrant EKG line, almost the color of clotted blood, navigating life. Interestingly, I never bought purple paint. I always mix red and blue to arrive at the exact hue, because it is so special and needs to be alive. As with all my paintings, I did not choose the style or subject matter, it chose me. This one in particular, painting the top part, a-la-Jackson Pollock, and especially painting the throbbing middle, have left me breathless. I pasted the words "Give thanks for Earth and sky" from the Jewish prayer in very small letters in the middle section. This painting is impressive, but not overpowering. There's also a story behind the wood piece of wood that represents the body of the boat. It belongs to a frame of an embroidery that hung in my mother's bedroom for many years. When it fell and broke, I had it re-framed, but could not part with the old precious pieces I have known all my life. Hangs on screws. The frame is thick enough to support the work.
